How can I convince my boss to send me to Global Scrum Gathering London?

You’re ready to expand your mindset, gather tools, insights, and inspiration to help your organization grow and thrive with Agile and Scrum. The next step is to convince your boss to send you to the next Global Scrum Gathering.

To bolster your confidence, here are some tips to tell your boss to reinforce your case.

Before you approach your boss, be prepared to present your goals, plans, and cost estimates.

  • At the top level, highlight a company goal, initiative, or perhaps some impediments that the organization is having to deal with.
  • Study the Gathering program and identify 3-4 sessions that tie those thoughts together with what you plan to learn from attending a keynote presentation, coaching session, or just the chance to ask an expert. The #SGLON18 program is broken out into four dedicated tracks:

        - Creating Better ScrumMasters
        - Creating Better Product Owners
        - Creating Better Teams
        - Creating Better Leaders

  • Map out an agenda that lists the sessions your plan to attend and the speakers you hope to talk to.

Lastly, spell out the estimated cost to attend.

Here’s some sample verbiage to use as you compose the letter to your supervisor. Good luck!

Hi, [NAME]:

Global Scrum Gathering, presented by Scrum Alliance®, is taking place 8-10 October in London. I would very much like to attend because I believe it will benefit [NAME OF YOUR ORGANIZATION] in numerous ways.

Global Scrum Gatherings happen twice a year, once in North America and once in Europe. The Gathering is known for being one of the most distinguished industry events, with quality sessions and extensive learning opportunities. This event affords a great opportunity to network with hundreds of Agile and Scrum practitioners, make possible deals and/or learn from peers in an in-person setting.

With our current company goals and impediments that we’re dealing with, this is an opportunity for me to:

  • Learn practical tips from presentations and interactive sessions led by experts in the Agile field
  • Be exposed to three full days of sessions that are tailored specifically to my role in our company
  • Have the opportunity to get one-on-one coaching
  • Network with like-minded people who can help me help our workplace culture
  • Help our company stay competitive with current trends and successful tactics

I have mapped out my agenda, so you can see what sessions I plan to attend.

Session Name: Three Ways to Build a DevOps Culture Workshop

  • Learn practical techniques, such as Value Stream Mapping, casual loops, and five whys for systems thinking
  • Visualize and learn to leverage feedback loops
  • Experience techniques on how to continuously learn and improve

As I mentioned, Global Scrum Gathering London is presented by Scrum Alliance®, the largest, most established and influential professional membership and certification organization in the Agile community. This nonprofit association has certified more than 750,000 practitioners worldwide.

Here are the approximate investment costs (in USD):
